First Time Visitor? What to expect.

Visiting a new church can be stressful for some people. Rest assured that even though Valley Church has been around for a long time and we have our share of traditions, everyone is welcome!  We are a friendly, family-oriented church that loves to worship God.

When should I get there?

Our worship is at 10:30 AM year-round and there is Sunday School at 9:30 AM. We also have a coffee fellowship time before worship in the church social hall in the basement.

What do I wear?

A few people dress up, but many people choose to dress down and come casual.  If you want to wear a suit, go ahead!  If you want to wear shorts and a t-shirt, that’s OK too. We believe respect and reverence for God is dependent upon our heart not our external attire. Come the way that you feel most comfortable.

What about my kids?

Children are welcome to join their parents in worship (we have a great children’s message every week and they ALWAYS get a treat!) but we do have a well equipped nursery available where you can leave your child with an attendant. If you are needed for any reason we have the ability to alert you in worship. You can also stay in the nursery and watch the service on television if you wish.

What is your worship style?

Our worship is a time for communicating our love, praise and gratitude to God from our hearts.  We have an upbeat, blended style of worship with guitars, bass, keyboard, and drums as well as traditional hymns and a choir.  Some clap or raise their hands to glorify God during our praise songs but many do not.  You’re welcome to do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

Do I have to give money?

Each week there is a time to worship God through the giving of tithes and offerings.  The offering can be the most profoundly spiritual act during worship. This is not a materialistic interruption, but an opportunity to express that we really mean it when we say we love God. Everything we have is from God and this is our time to return a small portion back to God for His ministry! Our relationship with God grows and we grow spiritually.

 What about Communion?

We celebrate communion the first Sunday of each month and on special occasions. As a Presbyterian Church U.S.A. we uphold the belief that:

“The Lord’s Supper is the sign and seal of eating and drinking in communion with the crucified and risen Lord. During his earthly ministry Jesus shared meals with his followers as a sign of community and acceptance and as an occasion for his own ministry.” (Book of Order W-2.4001a)

Around the Table of the Lord, God’s people are in communion with Christ and with all who belong to Christ. Reconciliation with Christ compels reconciliation with one another. All the baptized faithful are to be welcomed to the Table, and none shall be excluded because of race, sex, age, economic status, social class, handicapping condition, difference of culture or language, or any barrier created by human injustice. Coming to the Lord’s Table the faithful are actively to seek reconciliation in every instance of conflict or division between them and their neighbors. (Book of Order W-2.4006)

The Lord’s Supper is to be observed on the Lord’s Day, in the regular place of worship, and in a manner suitable to the particular occasion and local congregation. It is appropriate to celebrate the Lord’s Supper as often as each Lord’s Day. It is to be celebrated regularly and frequently enough to be recognized as integral to the Service for the Lord’s Day. (Book of Order W-2.4009)

The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all who have been baptized, remembering that access to the Table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. In preparing to receive Christ in this Sacrament, the believer is to confess sin and brokenness, to seek reconciliation with God and neighbor, and to trust in Jesus Christ for cleansing and renewal. Even one who doubts or whose trust is wavering may come to the Table in order to be assured of God’s love and grace in Christ Jesus. (Book of Order W-2.4011a)

What if I don’t hear well or have trouble reading small print?

We have personal hearing devices for those with hearing problems and we project the words to songs so they are easy to read from anywhere in the sanctuary.
